Preserved in rock, the fossil fungi were found near the city of Mbuji-Mayi in a ‘major’ discovery that smashes the previous age record by some million years. The fungi played a key role in the history of life by helping to create primordial soil that would later allow plants to first grow on the land. The primitive mushrooms grew in a lagoon or coastal lake, the researchers said. The ancient rocks containing the fungus are part of the collection of the Africa Museum in Tervuren, Belgium, while lies just outside of Brussels. The fungi were found in rocks that formed in a transitional area between water and the land. This fact, explained Professor Bonneville, ‘leads us to believe these microscopic mushrooms were important partners of the first plants that colonised the Earth’s surface around million years ago. The origin of mushrooms has mystified evolutionary experts for centuries.

Asylum seekers from Central African countries are pouring over the U. Claims for political asylum by citizens of the Democratic Republic of Congo DRC and the Republic of Congo ROC , since there is real war and persecution in those nations, may have more merit than do similar claims by the city-sized numbers of Hondurans, Guatemalans, and Salvadorans who are mainly economic migrants ineligible for asylum.
But with the Central Africans showing up, homeland security personnel at the border and decision-makers in Washington, D. The first factor is that many thousands of murderous, warring militia members have rampaged for years through villages of Central African nations like the Democratic Republic of Congo on killing, raping, kidnapping, and looting sprees. In , a well-known artist on the Kinshasa scene, who was also well-known as a gay man, was found murdered in his house. It was evident that he had been with a sexual partner. The artist’s house guard had told the police the name of his employer’s last sexual encounter, and how his boss had asked him to give them some time alone to discuss an issue inside the house.
This resulted in the community starting to investigate who the artist’s young sexual partner could possibly be — a person nobody had heard of before. It turned out that the man was a married father of three kids, who had been seeing the artist for a number of weeks; he had met him through the internet on the well-known Francophone dating website called PlanetRomeo. The murderer, who was convicted two weeks after the crime, also happened to be a serial killer who had been tried in the neighbouring Republic of Congo for the killing of two business partners.
He had escaped from prison there and sought refuge in his home town of Kinshasa, the capital city of the Democratic Republic of Congo DRC.

The fungi played a key role in the history of life by helping to create primordial soil that would later allow plants to first grow on the land.

Che Guevara and other Cubans under Castro by the Congolese nationalists was merely in response to Western intervention in the Congo dating back to .
The current era has witnessed the increasing need by the African Union AU and subregional organisations to be more involved as first responders to conflict situations in the region. This trend, which involves the use of preventive diplomacy efforts, mediation, peace support operations, peacekeeping, peacebuilding and post-conflict reconstruction and development efforts, has situated Africa at the forefront of peace processes on the continent.
The role of regional mechanisms in conflict intervention is further necessitated by the reality that conflict in the region provides a setback to regional development, and has the capacity to impact beyond the region. In addition, the reality is that collaboration, cooperation and concerted efforts are critical for resolving complex conflicts, such as the violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo DRC. Increasingly, African leaders are realising that the intervention of Western actors is often determined by Western priorities, which currently seem to be stretched due to the focus on countering violent extremism and terrorism in regions such as Somalia, Libya, Mali and Syria; dealing with the challenge of immigration; and other issues such as the implications of the recent exit of Britain from the European Union.
The DRC further provides an example of a conflict that not only has regional and transboundary dimensions and impact, but also requires regional efforts towards sustainably resolving it. Thus, the DRC conflict, particularly its intractability, has numerous risks for neighbouring countries and the region, due to the negative consequences from unstable conflict spillovers.
The deliberate and determined involvement of African organisations in intervention efforts in the DRC is based on the recognition that this conflict risks becoming forgotten, and that its endurance will breed intractability and an ingrained culture of violence. Arguing that SADC was the central regional organisation involved in conflict intervention efforts in the DRC, this article examines the background to the conflict in the DRC, provides a brief appraisal of the factors and issues that have contributed to its intractability, and discusses the role of African organisations in finding solutions to the crisis.
The article further evaluates SADC interventions, drawing lessons on how these efforts can be strengthened and bolstered for lasting peace. SADC is a regional economic community REC in the southern African region that seeks to promote sustainable economic growth and socio-economic development through integration, good governance and durable peace and security.
Since its independence in , the DRC has not known peace, and its problems have a long history dating as far back as the colonial era.

By the time they receded into the forest two days later, six people and 13 of the 14 “ambassador” okapi that lived at the center were dead. Among those murdered were two rangers, a government immigration official, two villagers and the wife of a third ranger—a revenge-killing by poachers who had been arrested by her husband in the past. The rebels—who were retaliating against antipoaching operations led by the OCP and the Institute in Congo for the Conservation of Nature ICCN —also burned buildings and looted supplies, doing tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of damage in the process.
The 14th okapi died a few days after United Nations and Congolese Army forces arrived to retake the village. Okapi Okapia johnstoni —horselike animals with zebralike stripes that are closely related to giraffes—are the national animal of the DRC, the only country in which they can be found. But the elusive, camouflaged animals are rarely if ever actually seen in the wild, and the 14 okapi penned in Epulu were the only ones in captivity in the country.
The nongovernmental organization was founded to protect the species and its habitat and has been raising, breeding and studying the animals for 23 years during the course of seven occupying armies. The okapi that lived at OCP—most of which were born in Epulu after their progenitors were trapped in the wild—had always served as a way to educate people about forest resources. These “ambassador animals” were frequently visited by politicians, military leaders, international visitors and Congolese people traveling through the region.
For more than 20 years, they served as an important tool to raise national and international support for the reserve and its abundant wildlife. This is the first time that any of the okapi at the Epulu center have ever been harmed. The previous armed conflicts in DRC dating back to the mid-’90s when it was known as Zaire were all led by people who wanted to rule the country and therefore respected its natural resources, says OCP founder John Lukas. But the militia that struck in June was a different beast altogether.
Led by notorious poacher Paul Sadala, who goes by the alias Morgan, the group was motivated not by political ideology but by greed.
